Mar Menor is a very large salt water lagoon in the south east part of Murcia, it is separated from the Mediterranean sea by a sand bar 26km long and is up to 7km wide it has a coast line of over 70km, the water is warm and very clear and is well known as ‘the largest swimming pool in the world’ the deepest point is only 7 metres and because it is so salty you can easily float on it with no effort at all.

Mar Menor translates as small sea or little sea and thats exactly what it is, a small sea with an ecosystem all its own, at the northern end of the sea is the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar which is a wetland natural reserve, the climate is ideal for the outdoor life all year round with over 300 days of sun and 19ºC average temperature.

As you are about to land at the airport you will probably see some pink lakes these are at San Pedro Del Pinatar and this area is known for its mud which is said to have curative properties because of it's high mineral content. The therapeutic values of the mud are supposed to be good for rheumatism, arthritis, gout, skin disorders, bone rehabilitiation, throat complaints and most other things you can think of.

The other thing that the area is known for is golf, it has some of the best golf courses in Europe if not the World, so if you are a keen golfer or just love soaking up the sun then Mar Menor is the place for you.
